Bahour Lake, Pondicherry

 Bahour Lake
Bahour Lake

Bahour Lake is a seasonal (it is generally dry for 5-6 months) freshwater wetland located about 20 miles south of Pondicherry town, near the village of Bahour.  It is the second largest lake in Pondicherry, with a storage capacity of 6.3 million cubic meters.

Bahour is one of two Important Bird Areas of India in Pondicherry for the number of birds sighted (over 25,000 waterfowl counted in 1995 and 1998) and for having more than 1% of the biogeographic population of several species of waterfowl including Eurasian Wigeon Anas penelope and Little Grebe Tachybaptus ruficollis.

Farming is still the primary activity in Bahour commune.  Water intensive paddy and sugarcane are the major crops, with some coconut plantations and toddy palms.

All the irrigation for the crops grown around Bahour is done using groundwater.  According to a farmer we met on the road, the government does not allow the farmers to use the water from the lake.  As in Ousteri, the government lets out fishing contracts, draining the lake 5 months after fingerlings have been introduced into Bahour to make the catch easier.

And here too, as in Ousteri, the government has plans to build a boat house and initiate tourism with motor boat rides on the lake.

Now, how is this going to work, you ask, since the lake is dry for much of the year?  Why spend all this money for a three-year project to build the infrastructure to allow boating?  According to a local Councilor and her son, the plan is to sink a borewell in the middle of the lake to pump groundwater to fill the lake when it is dry.  !?! This way, you get to catch your fish and have boating too.

Either way, the local farmers lose.  They have no access to surface water for irrigation, they are prohibited from fishing the lake, and their groundwater has turned saline.  The departments of Agriculture and Ground Water have had to install new wells up to 225 meters deep in Bahour since salt water has intruded into the second aquifer in the region.  An incredible mismanagement of ground water recharge mechanisms.  Hello people – you have a large lake right here!

“What will you do when your ground water turns saline? ” we ask the Councilor, who is a sugarcane farmer.  “We’ll sell the land for plots.”

Indeed, the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Bahour, who is also the Social Welfare Minister for the Union Territory of Pondicherry, is putting pressure on the farmers to sell their land.  Real estate speculators are preying on farmers who are in debt to acquire their land for Rs. 30 lakhs (close to US$ 77,000) an acre. They then divide the acre into 20’X60′ plots, which they sell for Rs. 3 lakhs each, for a total of Rs. 108 lakhs, turning a tidy profit of Rs. 78 lakhs.

First I would like to thank you for showing light on my little village, i’m really amazed to see this blog on Bahour lake. Yes, Bahour is really a wonder in Puducherry. I would also suggest you to blog on Bahour Moolanathaswamy temple as it is one of the most oldest temples in India. For your information, archeological research is going on about this temple in Bahour. As a native of Bahour i’ll be glad if you could blog on this. Good effort! Congrats!!!

  17. 18 k jeevanandam January 5, 2011 at 11:07 am

hello all my dear readers, i am a hard lover of my farming village Bahour. Bahour was a beautiful green village with many temples, chruch and masjid. it is having a second big lake in Puducherry. this farming village produced many agricultural products including paddy as its main cultivation and transported to all the part of our mother land. but today this beautiful green land converted to a look like desert, having all lands with real estate corner stones. if the poor farmers are not made awarness about the importance of their contribution to the mankind, in future we have to import the food grains from other part of country on high prices. so my kind request to the farming families is to preserve the remaining cultivatable land of our villaqge, so that we can pass down the beatiful village with natural beauty to our next generation to live with food self reliances.

  26. 27 Corrupt Politician December 10, 2012 at 9:49 am

Interesting. After 4 years, and several efforts to convert Bahoor into a mining area for coal (by another former CM (who now sits in opposition), another minister from Bahoor has once again pushing the tourism project, and now the bahoor tank associations are opposing this tooth and nail. The ability of the politicians with the help of corrupt bureaucratic set up have tremendous patience and wait and watch policy and they have struck again with calling of tenders for the tourism project which the tank users’ association have now temporarily stopped. The bahoor tank which has a rich history of over 1200 years, is once again subjected to torture and destruction if this tourism projects gets through. It is high time, the bahoor residents wake up to this threat and oppose their elected representative and ministers and tell them on their face that the Bahoor lake have survived the history all these years, and will definitely survive the short life spans of these corrupt ministers too. But if they dont do this, then Bahoor lake will slip silently to complete destruction in the “name of ” tourism and development.

  27. 28 Anandharaj Kaliamoorthy December 11, 2012 at 6:20 pm

Hi…. I am Anandharaj Kaliamoorthy from the village “Vinayagapuram” which is in brim of Bahour lake. I am really proud to be living near to this lake. This is a very good place to have relaxation & people love to live here. This lake is giving life to too many villagers with the help of this lake and surrounding like water, turf, booze, woodcutters and fishing. Nowadyas people migrated to city and they are missing the nature which was given by God.
